Grand Military Gold Cup Day at Sandown Park

GRAND MILITARY GOLD CUP AT SANDOWN PARK

Tuesday 8th March

Horseracing is often rich with pageantry and colour. No day more so than the Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown Park. Thanks to the pioneering spirit and lateral thinking of longstanding member, Mr Paul Lynch, Rag members were on hand this year to enjoy a beautiful Surrey afternoon rich in traditions and cheer home Colonel James Ferguson’s Rolling Dylan, ridden to great effect by Major Charlie O’Shea. Because we had hosted the trainer, Nicky Henderson, at the club for the now traditional Cheltenham Preview supper, those in attendance were able to heed his advice and not expect Ballycross to spring a surprise and beat the favourite. This caution and a few other shrewd “investments”, not least in the last race, meant those members who took a chance on the weather enjoyed a rewarding afternoon in every respect, and, most important, the good company of like-minded Rag members.
