Chairman’s Welcome

An introduction to the Club from Peter Grant Peterkin

I very much hope that you are enjoying, and finding what you need, on The Rag website. However, it is difficult to encapsulate online everything that goes on in the Club and all the facilities that a Club such as ours offers. I therefore encourage you, when you have a moment, to come to 36 Pall Mall and ask to be shown round and get a feel for the Club for yourself. You will be more than welcome.

The Rag was established in 1837 as a military club and nearly 200 years later it is still a leading London club with a military tradition and ethos and one that offers so much more, to not only members from a military background but also to those who have never served in the Services but who find The Rag conveniently located and a good value venue to meet friends, family and working colleagues.

For many of our members it is a Home-from-Home. We welcome both ladies and gentlemen and we have a vibrant group of Under 35s who organise an annual programme of events specifically targeted to younger members. Our in-house Events team also make sure there is plenty to excite, entertain and engage members with a roster of regular events ranging from talks, visits, and social evenings.

We also work to create an inclusive culture which values all our members equally. Being a member of a Club such as ours means that you will experience a sense of belonging to something special.  We have both civilian and military members, who come from all walks of life, backgrounds and nationalities.

The Clubhouse is very conveniently situated on the corner of the St James’s Square right in the heart of Mayfair, easily accessible by local tube stations at Green Park, Piccadilly and Charing Cross with plenty of buses up and down Pall Mall.

The facilities are first class and maintained to the highest standards in order to meet the needs and wants of our members. Drive in and use the underground car park before coming into the Club where you will find our 75 bedrooms are well appointed and there is an ongoing programme to improve them further. The Business Centre and the adjoining Ian Jacob Room are ideal places to work or hold meetings should you not want to book one of the variously sized business rooms. Our dress rules are relaxed and are guided by what members consider appropriate; so no need for a tie but sports kit should be reserved for using the gym, not having dinner in the Dining Room!

The range of Food and Drink is enviable with delicious seasonal menus and an excellent array of international wines served in the Dining Room. Light meals, snacks or drinks are available throughout the day in the ground-floor Smoking Room or the light and airy Ribbon Bar with its open-air terrace, the perfect spot to sit outside and relax after a busy day. We also have a number of public rooms where you can hold that larger family party or major event and be looked after by our excellent staff.

Our existing Membership is a wonderful mix of people living and working in London, of country members who use The Rag as a destination for a comfortable, secure and relaxed stay in the capital, and our friends from our reciprocal Clubs in the United Kingdom and across the world.

Come and enjoy a cocktail at the Smoking Room bar, soak up the convivial atmosphere and get chatting to fellow members – you may find yourself next to a visitor from one of our impressive list of global reciprocal clubs. Our members also make use of these clubs when travelling worldwide. The Rag is truly a Home-from-Home for many of our members so please carry on browsing the website and then come and see for yourself what’s on offer at our military club with a modern style.

Major General Peter Grant Peterkin CB OBE
