Billy Duff’s Supper Club

BILLY DUFF’S SUPPER CLUB
Friday 9th June | The Library | £67.50 per person

Who is Billy Duff? Why is there a ragamuffin on the Club logo? Indeed, why is the Club nicknamed the ‘Rag’? Join us as we journey back in time to uncover the answers to these questions through an interactive dining experience…
In 1838, when the Club first opened its doors, member Captain Billy Duff was quite the sociable character who hosted many supper clubs for his friends and peers. On one occasion when entering the Club-house demanding a late supper he declared the food at the Club a ‘Rag and Famish affair’, and so the nickname was born, passed down over the years by word of mouth.
So pleased with the reaction his outburst received in and out the Club, he had a set of buttons designed with a Ragamuffin motif. Despite his bad behaviour (which we will explore), Billy Duff remained a member of the Club until his death at the age of 44. His story has been retold, and no doubt embellished, over the years, and is even recorded in the pages of the Club’s history.
“He appears to be one of those featherbed soldiers who enter the Army solely for the purpose of wearing a red coat and being dubbed Captain” – Captain C W Firebrace, 1841

Fast forward to 2023, Billy Duff’s Supper Club is a chance for our members to be part of reviving the traditions started by Billy and his chums in the 1800s. The first of many to come, we invite you to gather with fellow members and to indulge in delicious food and wine, with a few surprises along the way, as we raise a glass to one of the liveliest characters in the Club’s long history.
