Julia is a yachtswoman – sailing Arthur Ransome’s Peter Duck – publisher and author. Her book Uncommon Courage tells of the wartime adventures during the Second World War of the ‘Gentlemen interested in yachting’ of the Royal Naval Voluntary Reserve and the Royal Naval (Supplementary) Volunteer Reserve. In this talk she will cover a remarkable episode in the Royal Navy’s history, when amateur sailors filled leadership roles, not just in the more usual naval capacityon big ships, or in Anti-Submarine and Mine Clearance, but in Coastal Forces, Commando Operations and Intelligence.
