TLC Talk: Catherine Ostler – The Renoir Girls: A History of Art, War and Betrayal

In 1881 Renoir painted the daughters of a rich Parisian family, the Cahen d’Anvers. Entitled Pink and Blue, the portrait captures a moment of peace. The damage of the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of Paris (1870-71) is healing. The antisemitism epitomised by the Dreyfus Affair (1894) had not yet fully broken cover.
Catherine Ostler’s book, built on extensive research and beautifully written, captures both the glory of the Belle Époque and the tragedy that lay beneath the surface.

Rag members Maria and Julian Sturdy-Morton met through a shared love of the arts. In 2010, the dynamic duo founded A Bit of TLC, an online members club for those passionate about theatre, opera, music and film.
