Unbeaten in 14 outings and ranked the people’s champion by readers of the Racing Post newspaper, Frankel was nurtured from foaling barn to racecourse heroics and now champion stallion status by Lord Grimthorpe, one of the Turf’s key figures for the last 50 years. This included two wins at Royal Ascot, in the St. James’s Palace Stakes as a three-year-old and in the following year’s Queen Anne Stakes. For this supper preview of the Royal Meeting, join Lord Grimthorpe at the table for his unique insight into a champion who excelled at the meeting and won ten Group One races with at least one in every season he raced at two, three and four, while success in the 2,000 Guineas made him a Classic winner.
The triumphs of Frankel and subsequent stallion acclaim was the culmination of Lord Grimthorpe’s three decades overseeing the equine holdings of the colt’s owner and breeder, Prince Khalid Abdullah.
