Orchestra at the Reform Club – Larks Ascending: Unmaking / Remaking Nature
Sunday 25th May at 16:00 | Reform Club Saloon & Gallery | £40.00
Stop. Close your eyes.
Imagine yourself sitting at the tree line’s edge, in your favourite place in the English countryside, overlooking a meadow of wildflowers and grasses waving in the wisp of a breeze. It’s a summer’s morning; the rising sun is warming the day. Bees hum. Birdsong.
It is with great pleasure that the Reform Club Classical Music Society invites members of weekend reciprocal clubs to our next Sunday concert, in which you will be transported into the heart of nature by Vaughan Williams’ much-loved The Lark Ascending, enhanced with other pastoral works by Honegger and Rautavaara. Under the direction of newly appointed Music Director, Leonard Elschenbroich, the Orchestra will guide us through this calm, Arcadian atmosphere, before changing tone with the energy of works from the late Beethoven and Hindemith. This is an exciting programme crafted by Leonard to explore music from the 1820’s, 1920’s and close to our own 2020’s. The 20’s theme will weave throughout our 2025 Sunday concerts, highlighting the uncertain times in which we find ourselves.
Accompanying the Orchestra as soloist for the first time is dynamic and sensational violinist, Ava Bahari, described by The Strad as a “notable emerging talent”, who has received numerous international awards and is artist-in-residence with the Gothenburg Symphony. Ava plays on an Antonio Stradivarius violin made in Cremona in 1694, on loan by the Anders Sveaas Almennyttige Fond.
Join us in warmly welcoming Leonard to his inaugural concert as OATR’s Music Director. We look forward to seeing you all.

About the Orchestra at the Reform Club
The Reform Club, through its links to the London classical music scene, has established an orchestra-in-residence – the “Orchestra at the Reform” – which is entering its third season of performances. The Orchestra plays exclusively in the Reform Club and offers the experience of orchestral concerts in a setting that is ideally suited to the chamber orchestra style and later small orchestra repertoire.
The Orchestra delivers first class professional-standard performances and plays under the baton of its Music Director, Leonard Elschenbroich and guest conductors selected for their established prowess or growing reputation. Soloists are equally carefully chosen, often to showcase emerging talent. The standard of musicianship and quality of performance is critically acclaimed.
