Lunch with Professor Douglas McWilliams
Tuesday 21st April | 12.00 for 12.30 | Clive Room | £65.00
In today’s volatile world, who really knows what the economic future holds… Professor Douglas McWilliams has a pretty good idea. As one of Europe’s foremost of economists and a highly respected forecaster and analyst of UK and world economic trends, he certainly has a better sense than the vast majority.
Join Professor McWilliams for a now signature Rag Salon Lunch to consider the present economic landscape and the economy’s direction of travel, so critical to our nation’s wellbeing with the quest for growth in mind. In particular, enjoy an analysis of key growth sectors such as road and rail transport, retail, cars, vans, trucks, property, construction, plastics and information technology, as well as London and the capital’s financial zone of which this lunch’s guest of honour is a world-acclaimed expert.
Indeed, Professor McWilliams is not only revered for his insight, his repute also extends to how he communicates his understanding. As a result, he is one of our most widely-quoted economists, with a unique talent for being able to put across complex economic facts and forecasts in terms that can be understood by non-specialists. All the better to grasp his forecasts, for which he has an award-winning renown, recognised by the Sunday Times and other publications alike.
After Oxford which he left with an MA in politics, philosophy, and economics, as well as an M.Phil in the last of these disciplines, Professor McWilliams served as Chief Economic Adviser to the Confederation of British Industry, following on from a stint as IBM UK Chief Economist. As for chairs, he was a visiting professor at Kingston University Business School. He has also served on the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
For The Rag, he will serve as an economic crystal ball.
