As one of the most respected historians there is, Andrew Roberts, Lord Roberts of Belgravia, never fails to share compelling thoughts. Those members who attended the Waterloo Dinner in 2025 will have heard him share rare insights into some of Napoleon’s most important marshals. This included one who, having suffered around 30 cuts in battle, earned the nickname “the sieve”.
Research unearthing such gems has now crystallised into a new book, “Napoleon and His Marshals”. Join Andrew for a literary salon lunch to mark the publication of his latest opus, brimming with similar bon mots that bring to life a period of history now over 200 years old.
As well as a strong sense of the personality of these marshals, the book also relays how each of them shaped Napoleon’s campaigns and the respective roles they played. We learn about them as well as more about Napoleon from the way in which he interacted with them, some of his most trusted associates.
This literary lunch offers a chance to share in Andrew Robert’s work and indeed quiz him personally in a perhaps more relaxed – yet still structured – environment than a commemorative supper.
