The crucial role that women played in the Second World War is an area of growing interest to historians. Clare Mulley, a familiar face from our television screens and voice on the wireless, has been paramount in broadening interest in this.
Her words have also reached far and wide. Her most recent book, “AGENT ZO: The Untold Story of Fearless WW2 Resistance Fighter Elzbieta Zawacka” tells the remarkable pathway of this courageous resistance fighter also known as ‘Zo’, the only woman to parachute from Britain to Nazi-German occupied Poland during the Second World War. There, while being hunted by the Gestapo, who arrested her entire family, she established a military intelligence network and couriered microfilm across wartime borders. As the only female member of Poland’s elite Special Forces, the ‘Silent Unseen’, she played a key role in the largest organised act of defiance against Nazi German occupation – the Warsaw Uprising.
