Even the annual Rag Members’ Dinner won’t be immune to him. President Donald J. Trump currently casts a long geopolitical shadow.

Genuine insight into the thinking currently taking place in the Oval Office is especially valuable at this time and indeed any time. With this in mind, for the members’ dinner and joining proceedings as the evening’s Guest of Honour will be Lord Darroch of Kew, Britain’s Ambassador to Washington from 2016 to 2019 coinciding with President Trump’s first term in office.

Lord Darroch’s candour in emails about the US President subsequently leaked brought about his resignation in 2019. Now outside the Foreign Office, he is free to speak his mind, foremost about the challenges the Government and the diplomatic world face at present in dealing with Washington, and also on the history of British relations with the US, in this semi-quincentennial year marking 250 years since the American independence. Beyond this, Lord Darroch will reflect on a career in service that extends back to the millennium and covers what might well be described as trouble spots today. From 2012 to 2015, he was the Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor – a role that included acting as Secretary of the National Security Council and leading the National Security Team on issues such as the rise of Daesh in Iraq and Syria, Russian aggression in Ukraine, the nuclear threat from Iran, and the collapse of governmental authority in Libya. Prior to his appointment as National Security Advisor, Lord Darroch served in Brussels as the UK Permanent Representative to the European Union from 2007 to 2011, representing UK interests in areas such as enlargement, the aftermath of the financial crisis, and the issues around European integration. From 2004 to 2007, he was EU Advisor to the Prime Minister and Head of the Cabinet Office European Secretariat.

Join this gathering for a rare insight into the diplomatic, military, and political world of today, including some of our most challenging arenas. An evening that will include a chance to have your questions for the evening’s guest shared with him on any aspect of his wide-ranging career.
