Waterloo Dinner – General Sir Simon Mayall

As has been tradition in the past, we will be commemorating the famous Battle of Waterloo by hosting a dinner in the Pall Mall Room. This year, we will welcome General Sir Simon Mayall as our Guest of Honour and Speaker. Members of The Rag are invited to join us for a welcome drinks reception in The Drawing Room, followed by a three-course dinner and an insightful talk from General Mayall.
Lieutenant General Sir Simon Vincent Mayall (born 7 March 1956) is a retired British Army officer.
He was educated at St George’s College, Weybridge, Balliol College, Oxford (BA in Modern History), and King’s College London (MA in International Relations). Commissioned into the 15th/19th The King’s Royal Hussars in 1979, he went on to serve in a series of senior command and staff appointments, with a career particularly focused on the Middle East.
He served as operations officer for 1st Armoured Division during the Gulf War, commanded 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and 1st Mechanised Brigade (deployed to Kosovo), and later held senior posts including Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Operations). He also served as the UK Government’s Defence Senior Adviser for the Middle East.
In addition to what is covered above, he is Chairman of the National Army Museum and a distinguished military historian, having written several books on the Middle East. He is also a fluent Arabic speaker.
