Squadron Leader (Rtd) Shaun Pascoe was an Emergency Nurse in the Royal Air Force. He has completed operational tours in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and then numerous tours of Afghanistan as Officer Commanding of the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT). The MERT is a unique team that projected forward to point of wounding on the battlefield using Chinook helicopters in often austere and challenging conditions. The MERT moved more than 6500 critical patients and Shaun has 1494 of those on his personal log.
Due principally to the substantial number of unexpected survivors, the lessons learned through MERT activity led to widespread and meaningful change to NHS practice. This included trauma management, the equipment and processes in every ambulance and resuscitation rooms in the UK.
As part of a Masters in leadership, Shaun undertook study into why in particular these teams were so effective and is often asked to brief large audiences on what makes effective teams and how leadership in austere conditions can help inform leaders in any field.
After his Service, Shaun set up and runs Turn to Starboard, a charity that takes veterans sailing to help transition after service life. The charity experienced significant momentum and is now supported by all the major military charities. It has several strands of activity including RYA courses, a fleet of yachts and a Tall Ship. More recently, in response to the pandemic, Turn to Starboard has broadened its charitable objectives to include sailing for the NHS and Emergency services under the banner of Project Argo. This experience is having a profoundly positive effect on those individuals who had no respite during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this year, Shaun founded The MERT Club – an organisation for all those who served on the Medical Emergency Response Teams (MERT) from all three services from 2006 to 2014 in Afghanistan. The MERT Club aims to reunite colleagues who undertook this unique role and share in the extraordinary lived experience.
Shaun also set up and runs Take Point Training. A leadership and management training company. They use the expertise of unique ex-forces facilitators to help companies and organisations across the country in diverse fields. Take Point has a large portfolio of clients from the construction industry, fulfilment, manufacturing and more recently has started delivering unique courses to NHS Trusts for their staff, who have been so stretched by the pandemic. Take Point helps organisations get the absolute best from their people and their leaders.
