Literary Lunch with Lord Dannatt & Robert Lyman
Wednesday 21st May | 12.00 for 12.30 | Clive Room | £65.00
As a former Chief of the General Staff, a role assumed after over 30 years of Service, General the Lord Dannatt has a vast experience of conflict and the military. All of which he has used to consider the Korean War.
The result of this is “War Without End, a book, written with Robert Lynam, who is one of our most gifted military historians, that examines the stand-off between East and West in Korea that ultimately defined the second half of the 20th century. The pages provide a critical analysis of the lack of preparation by the West for war; the results of the North Korean invasion in June 1950; the counter-stroke by MacArthur in September and then the strategic overreach which led to communist China’s involvement on the North Korean side, and the rapid escalation to consideration of the use of nuclear weapons. Ultimately, three million Koreans alone lost their lives as well as many personnel from other nations.
Join Lord Dannatt and Robert for a lunch offering both food and food for thought as they will share thoughts on Korea, putting this conflict into context to help us understand others past, and present, including Ukraine, for which Korea may have some bearing in the quest for peace. Sure also to be considered are other issues related to the services, both here and further afield.
A literary lunch doubly distinguished by virtue of having two guests of great note.
