Fireside Chat with Lord Simon McDonald

FIRESIDE CHAT WITH LORD SIMON MCDONALD

Lord Simon McDonald has been UK ambassador to Germany and in the likes of Tel Aviv in a glittering diplomatic career across five decades. This has also included advising Prime Ministers on foreign policy towards a range of nations, including Iraq. His intervention in the matter of the MP Chris Pincher’s conduct provided a talking point on standards of behaviour in parliamentary and public lives (and certainly contributed to the downfall of the Boris Johnson government).

Join Lord McDonald by the Fireside for the first conversation of the year on public service today and how this has evolved foreign affairs. Additionally, we will tap into “Leadership”, his book published in the autumn reflecting on a lifetime of public service. Continue this dialogue over supper in the Coffee Room where the chat may stay on these subjects as well as fresh themes in the company of someone who has seen much of the world and experienced both the best and worst of Whitehall.

‘An original, very well-written, and serious book which adds to the quality of public discussion.’ Anthony Seldon

‘This is a book full of riches – a despatch from deep inside the British state about how it really operates and how it could be run better.  In places, Simon McDonald wields his fluent pen like a blowtorch. His candour burns the page. ’ Peter Hennessy
