SUMMARY:Club Government: How the Early Victorian World was Ruled from London Clubs
DESCRIPTION:‘Club Government’ was a fixation of the mid-nineteenth century: across Britain and its empire\, press accounts\, diarists\, and writers such as Dickens\, Disraeli and Trollope all advanced the view that key political decisions were taken behind closed doors\, in the clubs of London’s St James’s district. Yet despite ‘Club Government’ being referenced in most major political histories of the period\, the topic has never before enjoyed a full-length study. \nMaking use of previously-sealed club archives\, and adopting a broad range of analytical techniques\, this talk seeks to deepen our understanding of the distinctive and novel impact of ‘Club Government’ on British politics in this period and concludes that while historians may have exaggerated the clubs’ reputation for interfering in elections\, they have hugely underestimated the extent of club influence on ‘high politics’ in Westminster\, and more importantly\, on the shaping of modern British political culture. \nDr. Seth Alexander Thévoz is an Associate Member of Nuffield College\, Oxford\, where he is a research assistant on the forthcoming official biography of Sir David Butler. He holds degrees from the Universities of Cambridge\, London and Warwick\, and he completed his PhD in conjunction with the History of Parliament Trust. His areas of expertise include the history of corruption in British politics. In his spare time\, he is Honorary Librarian of London’s National Liberal Club. \nSchedule: \n\n18.00 Reception Drinks\n18.30 Talk\n19.30 – 21.30 Supper

SUMMARY:Churchill: Walking with Destiny
DESCRIPTION:Winston Churchill dominates our view of the history of Britain in the twentieth century – the brash\, brave and ambitious young aristocrat who sought out danger in late Victorian wars\, the mercurial First Lord of the Admiralty who was responsible for the Dardanelles disaster in 1915\, the Colonial Secretary who rode with T. E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell at the Pyramids\, the Chancellor who took the country back to the Gold Standard and then spent more than ten years in the political wilderness – and who\, finally\, was summoned to save his country in 1940. ‘I felt that I was walking with destiny\, and all my life had been but preparation for that hour.’ Andrew Robert’s titanic new biography interprets all these events\, especially Churchill’s leadership during the Second World War\, which he sees through the prism of all Churchill’s earlier life. \nProfessor Roberts has used over forty collections of papers not available to Churchill’s previous biographer Roy Jenkins (2001) and he is the first Churchill biographer to be granted access by the Queen to the private diaries of King George VI.

SUMMARY:War and Warfare in the 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:What can we learn from war\, and warfare\, in the 20th century? Surprisingly\, the question has not been addressed. \nAfter the First World War four empires ceased to exist. Eight new countries were born in Europe. After the Second World War\, Japan and Germany renounced militarism and ceased to be major players on the world stage for decades. The border of Russia moved 800km west. War is hugely important. It is not futile\, although it sometimes seems so. \nBut how effective was the allied Combined Bomber Offensive in the defeat of Germany in the Second World War? There is\, in practice\, no real consensus. How did the western navies win the Battle of the Atlantic\, when there were far more U-boats at sea late in the war than in the early years? There is very little discussion\, and apparently no agreement\, as to how the western allies defeated Germany in north west Europe in 1944-5. Was it just superior numbers? (No.) Yet all of those campaigns took place over 70 years ago. Why are those questions unanswered? \nIn this talk retired Regular infantry officer Professor Jim Storr will be promoting his forthcoming book\, ‘The Hall of Mirrors: War and Warfare in the 20th Century’. The talk will range from the strategic to the tactical and\, quite possibly\, from the sublime to the ridiculous. Historians\, beware!
